Well written and engaging - I highly recommend it.
Belloc sardonically recounts the exploits of one Mahmoud, a sharp Baghdad merchant turned money lender who has grasped and clawed his way to the top. Ostensibly a critique of Islamic culture set many centuries ago, the book is really an attack on the unbridled greed of the modern West. As a work of socio-economic satire it forms a nice complement to Belloc's Distributist writings like The Servile State. A. N. Wilson calls it "the most brilliant of his fantasies."

Belloc's light-hearted satire on the entrepreneurial exploits of the merchant Mahmoud is as relevant and lucidly readable today as it was in 1922. Set in Arabia "in the days of Abd-er-Rahman", the roving venture capitalist recounts his parables to his seven nephews being Belloc's attack on greed in the modern West. Running from failure, finding uncountable success, Mahmoud's projects include bridge tolls, land speculation, banking and circulation of currency, and financing war, or better financing both sides of a war.
Mahmoud unscrupulously provides insight, entertainment, and detail of scams, fraud and exploitation with the caution that "Until a man's wealth has grown so great that he can command the whole state, he is always in some peril" or that "The bold hunter slays the lion, the timid is slain of the cub". Strictly a business entrepreneur the money is always drained from the community or the state.
"The Mercy of Allah" is another of Hilaire Belloc's books attractive to a wider audience than his restrictive and outdated description as "a great warrior for the Roman Catholic cause".
